Cyber Ribbon grew out of years of conversation among friends and colleagues whose work spans three decades at the intersection of technology, ethics, law, and society.

We’ve been part of the crypto wars and cypherpunk movement, the fight against SOPA/PIPA, the reckoning after Snowden, and the battles over online privacy, cybersecurity, Do Not Track, and Bitcoin’s blocksize.

Our work has contributed to Pulitzer Prize-winning journalism and public education, privacy tools used by millions, legal precedents protecting code as speech, and the creation of a new U.S. privacy regulator. We’ve helped shape technology policy around the world.

We take inspiration from the Blue Ribbon Campaign, which brought people together across the early web to defend free speech. A shared symbol made a shared conviction visible.

Today, frontier AI labs wield growing power over our lives. Cyber Ribbon connects developers, scientists, activists, educators, and users in a grassroots movement for collective action. We want a greater say in how technology is built and governed—and more control over our data, identities, personhood, and rights.
